Mrs. Kirchmeier's biology students created ecosystem simulations using 2-liter bottles to explore the cycling of the essential elements carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen through biotic and abiotic components of an aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem. Students worked with a partner to design a way to connect the two ecosystems so that nutrients can cycle appropriately and life can be sustained for a month-long period. They assembled their ecosystems in class and will collect daily observations throughout this month. After the month, students will write a report of their findings, relating their observations to what they know about the cycling of nutrients and the interrelationships of organisms. Organisms include goldfish, mums, grass, aquatic grass, crickets, and superworms.
